Noémi Bélanger – The Soul of Things

28 March - 20 September Tolosa Activities with children, Exhibition

“The Soul of Things” is an exhibition created by the multifaceted Quebec artist and puppeteer Noémi Bélanger, inviting us to discover, through five scenes, human and animal characters of varying dimensions, even reaching life-size.

The Quebec sculptor and puppeteer Noémi Bélanger creates narrative and visual universes, driven by her desire to give life to the inanimate. Through her works, she seeks to redefine the bonds between species, presenting human and animal characters that coexist and reveal themselves. Her works, of varying dimensions—up to life-size—coexist in stage productions, exhibition halls, theaters, and on screen. Her work is presented as a visual poem imbued with symbolism.

Her expertise in textile arts, her inspiring imagination, and her unique style quickly set her apart, leading her to present her work in far-reaching solo exhibitions. A specialist in needle felting, the artist sculpts wool. The handcrafted textures, the result of thousands of stitches, remind us that the work is handmade, conveying to the figures, like an echo, the existence of the human being behind the work. The felted wool, with its uneven composition, lends the figures a certain imperfection, reflecting an endearing humanity. The visual effect of these humans with animal skin awakens tactile sensations in the viewer. Truly unique narrative works that the artist readily presents, her figures fix their gaze on the viewer, initiating a dialogue.
