Rural Memory

A legacy of life in the countryside

Rural memory is a fundamental piece of the identity of Tolosaldea and of all Euskal Herria. This legacy is embodied in the classic Basque farmhouse (Baserri), which for centuries was the economic and social engine of the region. We invite you to explore this living past through our traditional architecture and the Larraul Ecomuseum, the space dedicated to preserving this important story.

The Baserri is the heart of rural life

The Basque farmhouse is much more than a mere building; it is the central institution of rural life in Tolosaldea and a symbol of Basque culture. Traditionally the baserri functioned as a self-sufficient family unit where agriculture, livestock and forest management were carried out. It is the origin of the local cuisine we celebrate today.

Characterized by their robustness, large wooden beams and orientation toward work and shelter, farmhouses dot the landscape of our valleys, serving as the best living testimony of our history. The baserri culture forged a deep sense of community and mutual aid —values that still survive in the villages of Tolosaldea.

The Larraul Ecomuseum guards our memory

The Larraul Ecomuseum is a museum space fully dedicated to rescuing, exhibiting and dignifying this rural history. The ecomuseum does not just collect objects; it tells the stories of the people who experienced the transformation of the countryside.

Visiting the Larraul Ecomuseum offers a broad perspective on life in the baserri and helps to understand the close relationship between community and natural environment. It is the perfect complement to a walk through the region’s rural landscape, allowing the visitor to understand the context of the rural memory they are treading on.
