Valley of water and forests

Lizartza is located in the narrow Araxes river valley, where water has a great importance thanks to a existence of a spring. The name refers to the large forests surrunding it: etymologically it means «place with plenty of ash trees».

Qué ver en Lizartza

Lizartza is a center of great architectural and natural beauty. Its Town Hall is a perfect example of traditional Gipuzkoan construction and stands opposite the robust Parish of Santa Catalina. The history of the municipality is linked to its famous spring, the source of Insalus Waters, whose exploitation began after the discovery of its properties in 1859.

Town Hall

Lizartza’s town hall is a good example of Gipuzkoa’s former architecture, with the ground floor of stone and the upper floors of wooden beams. In front of it Santa Catalina parish is located. Throughout the village there are large houses with great architectural beauty.

Tabernacle chapel or Ubereta chapel

The original chapel was built between Lizartza and Orexa, but after finding it destroyed it was rebuilt next to the river, in front of the Orexa intersection. It is said that the Virgin was brought from Flanders in the 17th century.

Spring

Located at the outskirts, towards Navarre, it was discovered in 1859, although its explotation didn’t start until 1862, with the opening of Insalus Spa. In 1888 was declared of public utility and the company Aguas de Insalus (Insalus waters) was created for the bottling of the water. Nowadays is one of the most traditional brands.

Archaeological monuments

There are neolithic dolmens –Axurdarioko Trikuharia– on the slopes on Urkita mountain, Bronze Age ones at Otsabio mountain and a burian mound on the Pagoaundi pass, on the way to the top of Laparmendi mountain, from which there’s a good view of Aralar. For spelunking loves, Illarrantzu cave is located nearby.

Añi recreational area

Picnic area in the border with Navarre, at the banks of Araxes river, in front of the former Mikeletes house.
