Gelede Mask Exhibition

Gelede Mask Exhibition

2025-11-08 - 2025-12-07 Tolosa Exhibition
An exhibition of Gelede masks will be open until December 7th in the Ambigú Room of the Topic Museum in Tolosa. The Gelede tradition originated in the Ketu region of the Republic of Benin towards the end of the 18th century, later spreading throughout the Gulf of Guinea region. Its practice is deeply linked to the annual festival held at the beginning of each agricultural cycle, although it is also performed on special occasions such as after harvests, during droughts, epidemics, or significant community events. The masks are worn on the head like a helmet, covering the skull but leaving the face uncovered. The upper part of the mask features complex scenes depicting daily life, including human figures, animals, and symbolic elements.
