Qué ver en Abaltzisketa

Abaltzisketa is a natural window where the historical heritage of its churches and hermitages blends seamlessly with the Aralar landscape. From the heart of the village to the vibrant Larraitz pass, the municipality offers accessible walks, peaceful rest areas, and some of the finest panoramic views in the region.

Larraitz pass

Larraitz pass, just below Txindoki mountain, is a popular destination for cyclists and mountain lovers. The reason for that is because it’s the starting point for a great number of routes that go into Aralar. In the peaceful picnic areas you can rest while enjoying the breathtaking views and magical sunsets. There is also an adventure park for children and two restaurants. A 2km long nice accesible trail connects Abaltzisketa and Larraitz.

San Juan Bautista church

Even though Abaltzisketa’s San Juan church is from the 16th century, the arcade is from the 13th century. It’s also worth mentioning the bell tower, thanks to the size of the bell, made in Abaltzisketa in 1493.

Larraitz chapel

Located at the Larraitz pass, it was built in the 18th century. Inside there’s a Gothic wooden statue of Virgin Mary, worshipped by local shepherds and farmers. Accessible though a beautiful 2km path from the centre of the village.

Txutxurrumendi chapel

On top of Txutxurrumendi hill, accessible throught Stations of the Cross made of 15 limestone crosses starting from San Juan church. The view of the village, with Txindoki on the back, is outstanding.

Resting area of Zamao

In addition to the Larraitza resting area, Abaltzisketa has another resting place, the one of Zamao. It has tables and benches, shelter, fountain and parking.
