Another bastion of Tolosa beans

Nested in the Salubita valley, between Hernio and Intxur mountains, Albiztur has been inhabited since the Neolithic age. Surrounded by fields and crops, it was in fact a trailblazer in cultivating the beloved Tolosa beans. The architecture of the farmhouses stands out.

Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion church

Built in the 17th century over a smaller one, it’s located in the beautiful centre of Albiztur. Of Barroque style, includes two ashlar doors on each corner and a beautiful arcade.

San Gregorio chapel

At the village’s entrance, from the 16th century, preceded by one of the many stone crosses of the village. This one in particular has carvings of Christ martyr. The altarpiece is by Jeronimo de Larrea.

Former washing place

The former washing place (lavadero) is located behind the church and has an octagonal water fountain. It was built in 1863. The opposite building is the former hospital.

Santa Marina neighbouhood

Located halfway through Albiztur and Bidania-Goiatz, taking the Santutxo intersection. The Way of St. James goes through here, and most of Aralar Mountain Range can be seen. Santa Marina de Argisain Romanesque church, the former pilgrim hospital and Santa Marina Haundi farmhouse, with flamboyant Gothic traits on its arches, are the main attractions.

Mendikute Castle remains

Mountain path beneath the Hernio massif that finishes on the Mendikute peak, where the remains of the first medieval fortress documented in Gipuzkoa can be found. It belonged to the Kingdom of Navarre, and it is believed it could exist since the 9th century. A few metres below there’s the Gentilen-meatza cave (mine of the Gentiles), although the access to it isn’t easy.

Intxur and Gipuzkoa’s tallest tree

A Douglas fir, planted a century ago and with a height of over 55 metres, is the tallest tree in Gipuzkoa. Its height equals a 16 floor building. It’s surrounded by a group of high firs. Located on the way to Intxur mountain, where about 3,000 years ago there was a settlement of the same name.
